FIBER CEMENT SIDING: WHEN INSTALLATION MISTAKES TURN COSTLY
Fiber cement siding, often marketed under brand names like HardiePlank, is widely valued for its durability and resistance to fire, pests, and rot. However, improper installation can undermine these benefits and lead to premature damage. Common errors include inadequate clearances from grade or roofing, improper nailing techniques, lack of flashing, and failure to seal joints correctly. These mistakes can allow moisture intrusion, resulting in swelling, cracking, or delamination of the boards over time.
Whether such issues constitute a structural defect depends on the extent and impact of the damage. In most cases, siding serves as a protective cladding rather than a load-bearing element, so defects are considered cosmetic or related to water management. However, if improper installation leads to significant moisture infiltration that damages underlying framing or sheathing, the problem may escalate into a structural concern requiring more extensive remediation.
