COOLING OFF: A COMFORT WORTH APPRECIATING
As Europe struggles through an intense and often unbearable heat wave, Americans may be reminded of one comfort many of us take for granted: central air conditioning. Across much of the United States, walking into a cool home after enduring sweltering summer temperatures is so routine that we rarely stop to appreciate it. Yet in many parts of Europe, air conditioning remains far less common because historically milder climates made it seem unnecessary. As temperatures climb and heat waves become more frequent, many Europeans are facing dangerous indoor conditions with limited relief.
That does not mean the U.S. has solved every challenge tied to extreme heat. Air conditioning increases energy demands and costs, and not everyone has equal access to it. Still, when the heat index soars, central air can be more than a luxury—it becomes a safeguard for comfort, health, and daily life.
