FROM PASSIVE TO POWERFUL: HOW RADON SYSTEMS KEEP YOUR HOME BREATHING SAFELY
A passive radon system is a built-in pathway designed to let radon gas escape from beneath a home before it seeps into living spaces. During construction, builders install a vent pipe that extends from the gravel or soil under the foundation up through the roof. The idea is simple: rising warm air naturally helps pull radon upward and out of the house without mechanical assistance.
But sometimes natural airflow isn’t strong enough to keep radon at safe levels. When testing shows elevated readings, the passive system can be converted into an active one. This usually involves adding an inline fan to the existing vent pipe—quiet, steady, and endlessly patient in its task. Once the fan is running, it creates consistent suction, drawing radon out far more effectively.
The beauty of a passive system is that it’s already halfway to being active, making upgrades straightforward when protection needs a boost.
