ICE DAMS: THE HIDDEN DAMAGE BEHIND WINTER MELTS
As temperatures swing above freezing this week, many homeowners will face a hidden winter hazard: ice damming. An ice dam forms when heat escaping from your attic warms the upper portion of a snow-covered roof. Snow melts, runs downward, and then refreezes along the colder roof edge and gutters. Over time, this creates a ridge of ice that traps water behind it.
That trapped water has nowhere to go except backward — under shingles and into your home. The result can be soaked insulation, stained ceilings, warped drywall, and even mold growth. Ironically, the problem often appears during melting periods rather than snowstorms, which is why late-winter thaws are risky.
This week’s warming weather means existing roof snow will melt quickly during the day and refreeze at night — perfect ice dam conditions. Watch for icicles, uneven roof melt patterns, and water spots indoors. Proper attic insulation, ventilation, and safe snow removal are key to preventing expensive damage before spring arrives.
