MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND ARRIVES, BUT SUMMER WEATHER DOESN’T
Memorial Day weekend is supposed to be New Jersey’s unofficial kickoff to summer — the ceremonial opening of pools, patios and propane tanks. By now, grills should be sizzling, kids should be cannonballing into icy water, and neighbors should be debating whether burgers or hot dogs deserve top billing. Instead, this year’s forecast looks more like late March than late May.
The weather, apparently, did not get the memo. Rain clouds and chilly temperatures have crashed the party just as residents were ready to drag patio furniture out of garages and declare winter officially over. Backyard hosts are checking weather apps every 20 minutes, wondering if burgers can somehow be grilled under an umbrella.
Still, New Jerseyans are nothing if not stubborn about summer traditions. If the sun refuses to cooperate, we’ll move the party into the garage, hover near patio heaters and insist it’s “not that bad out.” Because around here, Memorial Day means summer — even if the thermometer disagrees.
